Ultrasound Surprise!

We went in for our first ultrasound on February 10, and I thought myself to be 13 weeks along.  We thought we were just there for the anatomy scan at the end of the first trimester and would simply be seeing our little baby for the first time.  (Of course, there's always hope you'll be able to find out the gender, but we weren't expecting it.)  Well, I laid down on the exam table, pulled up my shirt, and the doctor put the wand on my stomach and with zero hesitation (and an in-between the leg shot clear as day) exclaimed, "It's a girl!"  Talk about a flood of emotions!  He finished the scan, and everything appeared healthy, PTL.  However, he asked me again how far along I thought I was, and when I said "13 weeks," he responded with, "Nope, you are 17 weeks and due July 20."  We were hesitant to believe him, thinking American babies are generally bigger than Brazilian babies, and ultrasound measurements are generally more accurate earlier in the pregnancy, but he told us there were certain parts of the scan he couldn't perform because the baby was so much larger and more developed than a baby is at the end of the first trimester.  He also told us it was so clear that our little bit is a girl because I am farther along than we thought.

Still being unsure, I waited until I saw my regular doctor to run these results by him.  He agrees that I am, in fact, well into my second trimester and due July 20.  *If you're a guy reader, cover your eyes for the explanation*  Turns out what I thought was a light period in November was more likely implantation bleeding and that's why I was thrown off on my dates.  This at least explains why I was feeling all of those pregnancy symptoms so early (or what I thought was early) in my first trimester and why my belly looks so enormous! haha.  And the due date of July 20 matches exactly with the date of my true LMP.  It's definitely going to be a pain going back and trying to re-fill out everything in my pregnancy journal...

And even after that, there was some doubt that I was still due in August.  So we came home and pulled out my first trimester anatomy scan with Oliver to compare the measurements of him with this new baby.  We thought if they were similar, we would stick with the original due date, however....this baby was way bigger at this ultrasound than Oliver was.  I typed in her measurements online and was given the estimation on several different sites of her being 17 weeks along with a July 20 due date.  So I'm thinking that the agreement of three different sources should probably confirm that I am carrying a July baby instead of an August one!

Sorry, that was a lot of info....Now let me get to the part about us having a GIRL!!!  I think we were so prepared to hear it was another boy (and also not expecting to find out the gender for another month or so), that we were in complete shock at the appointment.  We love our boys, and after two, that just kind of feels like the norm for us, ya know?  But I am wonderfully excited to know that we have a sweet baby girl coming to join our family <3  Nick keeps saying, "What are we going to do with a girl?!" haha, but I know he's happy about it too.  (Now, when she's a teenager, that might be a different story...)  It still doesn't seem real, but I just ordered a good supply of bows and dresses so maybe when those arrive it will start to sink in :)  All in all, we are just so thankful for another healthy baby and can't wait to see the adventure we have in store with two boys and a girl.
