No Job's Too Big, No Pup's Too Small

Our Maya Jean turned FOUR years old on Easter Sunday.  Each one of us caught ourselves asking, "How can it be that she's four already?" throughout the week.  Poor thing was down with a fever in the days leading up to her birthday, but thankfully was feeling much better the day of.  We were able to go to the local international church with our neighbors (and dear friends) in the morning, eat yummy Funfetti cupcakes after lunch, have a family egg hunt in the afternoon, order McDonald's for dinner, and open some presents before hitting the hay.

Maya is such a blessing to our family.  She is full of personality and continues to make friends wherever she goes. I'm constantly surprised how people greet her by name when we're walking around all the different segments of the school, haha.  Maya loves to dance, talk, jump on the trampoline, and be with her siblings and friends. And while she is definitely sweet, she's also a lot of personality and energy rolled into a tiny little package.  She's in her third year of school, her second at Mackenzie, and because of when her birthday falls, is the oldest in her class.  We've loved hearing from her teachers how she is such a helper to others.  This year, she began taking swim lessons with her best bud Brady, and has already 'graduated' from Mommy and Me swim to solo classes.  She says she's getting ready to "do her diving" like big brother Oliver and big sister Leine.  Another thing that's been fun to watch develop this past year is Maya's sense of imagination.  She prepares us toy food and drinks, takes care of her baby dolls, and frequently turns into a puppy.

For Maya's party this year, she decided on a Skye theme from Paw Patrol.  We had a simple (well, simple in Brazilian standards), backyard bash with her 6 best friends from school.  We rented an inflatable water slide, had the trampoline and a parachute, put on Paw Patrol tattoos, and ate hotdogs, chips, and fruit. It was a perfect day celebrating our girl with her friends and their families.

Maya answered all of her birthday survey questions on her own this year and only had trouble coming up with responses for two. Love this girl and how she's growing!

Soccer and Space

Double digits always feel like such a big deal.  I've realized lately that I still view Leine as my 4 or 5 year old little girl and time has just stolen that away from me.  She is such a witty, unique individual and keeps us laughing (and shaking our heads) with her antics.  I'm grateful how loved she is at school (well, maybe a little too loved by the boys), and thankful for how she is learning and growing.  It has been a joy to watch her personality take shape and I can't wait to see what this next year brings.

For her birthday, I told Leine we could "do it big" since she was turning double digits.  She decided to have a Tio Leandro party like her brother Oliver did for his 10th, and have a soccer and space theme.  This made me laugh, because she's not super into soccer, but she thought her friends would have fun with that (and she wanted to win a trophy).  Space makes more sense, because she's been saying she wants to be an astronaut when she grows up. We had her friends over on a Saturday afternoon and they had a great time playing in the backyard before Tio Leandro's crew arrived to lead them in organized games, face painting and hair braiding, and a soccer tournament. Leine was one of the captains and ended up with all Americans on her team (Oliver and two siblings we met recently who are with the U.S. Embassy), so they were, of course, Team U.S.A.  And to their delight...they won the tournament! Everyone won medals with a picture of Leine on it, trophies were given out to the best goalie and the best offensive player (Oliver won and gave his trophy to Leine) and to the MVP (the birthday girl herself).  We were running pretty late by the end so we sang happy birthday and cut her space cake in a rush, but I think it's safe to say our girl had a good party.

Cheeseburger Celebration

For Carter's 14th birthday (yes, you read that right - FOURTEENTH), he just wanted to hang out with his friends.  So we invited the crew over and they hung out for a bit. Carter planned out a Mario Kart championship on the Super Nintendo which was fun, and then we piled into the van (and our car) to head to Johnny Rockets! We had a large table reserved on the second floor of the restaurant and were able to introduce most of his friends to the retro diner, soda fountain drinks, and American cheeseburgers.  Funnily enough, I think everyone's favorite part was running around on the kiddie playground, haha.  Like his brother, Carter also requested I make ooey gooey bars instead of getting a cake, so we sang happy birthday and then dug in. (Well, we were pretty stuffed after the unlimited french fries and soda pops, so maybe dug in isn't the right terminology).  All in all, I think our guy had a pretty good night.

My little Carter bug truly isn't so little anymore.  He's got just an inch or so to catch up to me in height, has some chin hairs (haha), and is responsible enough to walk home from school on his own and stay with his siblings if Nick and I need to run out.  He continues to be a kind boy with a good heart and we are so very proud of him.  He's still playing basketball at school, and after two years of being the only boy in his grade on the team and paying his dues a little on the bench, he is now a leader on the team with 5 or 6 other boys from his class. We sure do love him and look forward to watching him grow in the coming years. (But also can't believe how short our time left with him at home is...)

11-Year-Old Oliver

(Before I begin, in full transparency, it is currently September 10th and I am sitting down to write this birthday post from the end of May. However, in my defense, I truly believe I already wrote this post and it somehow didn't save! Oh well, here we go again...)

On May 24th, our second little dude turned 11 years old.  To celebrate, he decided to have a movie night with his friends the day before.  On Friday, May 23rd, three of Oliver's best friends (Nathan, João Francisco, and Vítor) came home with us from school. They enjoyed an "American" lunch (PB&J sandwiches, fruit, and chips) and had fun playing in the backyard on our new (to us) zipline, playing ping-pong on our new (to us) table, swimming in our neighbors' pool, and, of course, playing soccer.  Then at 6:00, more friends came over for some time of playing in the yard, followed by a movie on the lawn.  We had popsicles, ordered pizza, popped a lot of popcorn, and sang happy birthday - not with a cake, but with ooey gooey bars (at Oliver's request).  I loved the simple party and watching Oliver laugh and play with all of his friends.

We are thankful for all the friendships Oliver has made and proud that Oliver seems to be a friend to all.  It's wild that he's already in his last year of elementary school and becoming more and more independent. (Where is my chubby-cheeked toddler?!).  Oliver is very social and always wants to be playing or doing an activity with someone. He continues to play futsal (indoor soccer) at school and has also started going to diving practice this year. Oliver is very generous and giving, but also has a little rebellious streak that only seems to come out at home...His teachers don't believe us when we tell them about it, haha.
