Since Oliver's and Carter's birthdays are just 11 days apart, we decided to throw them a joint party (as I think we will do for many years to come). Oliver turned 1 on the 24th (how is that possible?!) and Carter will be 4 on June 4th (how is THAT possible?!). We decided to go with a pirate theme and, as always, I let my creative juices flow a little too much and we had lots of 'fun' projects to accomplish before the big day....Let me just say how incredibly grateful I am that I have a husband who not only puts up with me and my ideas, but also helps execute all my projects!
We invited friends from church, our org., and Carter's school to celebrate the boys with us at our house. RSVP's are not even asked for here in Brazil, but we took a chance and requested people to send us a message letting us know if they would come or not...Well, we heard from 4 a few days before the party, and 4 more the day of the party (out of the close to 40 invitations we handed out). I don't think they understood the purpose of the RSVP was to help us know how much food and seating to get beforehand! haha. We ended up with about 30 friends here, which was a great size, but had bought enough food for closer to 100 because we had NO idea how many would come (what if each kid had come with their parents and a sibling?). So now we have hot dogs coming out of our ears...haha.
The party was from 11:30-2:30 and we were told many times by our Brazilian friends that they had never heard of a party taking place so early in the day. Parties here begin at night - regardless of the child's age. We've been to some for young kids, 2 and 3 years old, that have still had people arriving close to 10pm! I am very happy that we were able to have it earlier in the day so that our boys could nap after as we cleaned, and then we could have a relaxing evening together.
Carter had soooo much fun running around with his friends and playing the games we had prepared. And he, of course, loved his cake! Oliver was just happy there was food ;)
